Michelin restaurants in Stockholm

Publish date: 22 August 2024

Stockholm is home to several Michelin-starred restaurants, so if you're up for some truly innovative dining adventures, you've come to the right city.

In recent years Stockholm has gained international attention and a reputation as a place where chefs are reinventing their roots and food traditions and creating new ones. This hasn't gone unnoticed by the esteemed Guide Michelin. Stockholm is home to 12 restaurants with one, two, or three stars in the venerated restaurant guide.

Stockholm's fanciest restaurants holding one or two Michelin stars are blazing their own trails and continuously seeking new ways to present Swedish cuisine. And in 2018 the famed Frantzén earned its place in history as the first restaurant in Stockholm to earn the highly coveted third Michelin star.

In addition to the regular stars, Guide Michelin launched its new Sustainability Emblem for the Nordic Countries in February 2020. A new, green, symbol highlights those restaurants at the forefront with their sustainable gastronomy practices. The guide also highlights price-worthy restaurants that still serve world-class food with the Bib Gourmand emblem.

Here are the stars on the Stockholm version of gastronomy heaven:

  • Frantzén – Frantzén received its third star in 2018, becoming the first of its kind in Sweden. Located in a renovated 19th-century townhouse, diners change rooms and floors as they work through the innovative menu.

  • Aloë – Aloë has brought fine dining – a mix of International and Southern European cuisine – to the suburbs. The restaurant is located in a modest residential building in Älvsjö.
  • AIRA – A menu of seasonal Nordic flavors and ingredients, in beautiful surroundings overlooking the sea. Head chef Tommy Myllymäki wanted AIRA to be worth a detour, with its location on Djurgården Island, obviously succeding as the restaurant received its second star in 2023.

  • Sushi Sho – An unassuming and stylish sushi restaurant that was awarded a star in the 2016 Guide. Diners are served a tasting menu of 15 dishes prepared in the open kitchen.
  • Ekstedt – Niklas Ekstedt envisioned his eponymous restaurant as a place where food is prepared and cooked using traditional open-flame methods. The Guide Michelin awarded his vision in 2013 with the restaurant's first star.
  • Operakällaren – Operakällaren has undergone many changes and permutations during its +200 year lifespan. The historical establishment in central Stockholm has been serving food and drinks since 1787 from its location in the Royal Opera House.
  • Etoile – Surprising and creative, Etoile strives to subvert diners' expectations with its playful set menu. The restaurant received its first star in 2020 and has also been awarded a green star for its focus on sustainability.
  • Nour – Stylish and relaxed, Nour fashions itself as an "alternative fine dining"-restaurant. Restaurant manager and chef Sayan Isaksson mixes the high standards of a fine dining establishment, but in a setting that's reminiscent of coming home to someone for dinner.
  • Adam & Albin – Celebrity duo Adam Dahlberg and Albin Wessman teamed up for a culinary workshop/pop-up eatery in 2014, which was made into a permanent restaurant in 2016.
  • Seafood Gastro – Mathias Dahlgren's latest venture is a fine-dining fishery located at Grand Hôtel in Stockholm. The tasting menu sources almost all of its flavors and ingredients from the sea: fish, shellfish, algae, water plants, and seabirds.
  • Dashi – As the name implies, dashi broth is the foundation for much of the Japanese restaurant Dashi's seasonal osusume tasting menu. The restaurant opened in 2023 and received its first Michelin nod in 2024.
  • Celeste – Etoile's sister-restaurant Celeste opened on Södermalm in 2023 and quickly wowed diners with its playful and inventive menu and drinks. Located in a penthouse on Torkel Knutssongatan, Celeste received its first star in 2024.

The Green Star is given to restaurants at the forefront of sustainable cooking. The star can be given in addition to the regular stars and is awarded to restaurants that go out of their way to use locally sourced produce and take extra measures to reduce their carbon footprint and food waste.
