Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of church music, was annually celebrated by London’s musicians in the late 1600s with banquets and newly composed odes. The tradition was revived in 1739 by G.F. Handel with the cantata Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day, which is now performed by Storkyrkan’s Vocal Ensemble, Maria Keohane, Anders J. Dahlin, and Orfeus Barock. Handel’s work features vibrant choral sections and charming arias. Conductor: Gary Graden.

New Year's Concert in the Stockholm Cathedral

From autumn 2024 the Swedish public will be invited to discover Norwegian painter Lars Hertervig (1830 – 1902). Hertervig’s expressive work will be shown in an intriguing dialogue with works by the well-known Swedish painter Carl Fredrik Hill (1849 – 1911). The exhibition has been created in collaboration with Stavanger Art Museum and the Nordic Institute of Art.

During the second world war, more than 30 000 people fled across the Baltic sea to escape German and Soviet occupation. They fled from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in different kinds of boats. The exhibition Fleeing the Baltics focuses on the before and after of the escape across the Baltic sea. Those who can tell us today about the break-up and escape were children during the war. Their memories and objects are the starting point for the exhibition.

Boxing Day, also known as St Stephen&#x27;s Day, is dedicated to Saint Stephen. At Stockholm Cathedral, the day is celebrated with a traditional concert where the audience and performers join together to sing Christmas carols and hymns. Historically, young people celebrated by dressing up and riding through the village, singing traditional St Stephen’s songs. Performers include Stockholm Cathedral Choir, Lukas Arvidsson violin, Mattias Wager organ, Helene Stureborg, and Gary Graden conductors.

Ice skating on lakes, or the sea, is wonderful. This activity is suitable both for beginners and for experienced ice-skaters. The meeting point is at the lake Källtorpssjön, situated only 15 minutes from Stockholm. Depending on your previous experience, you&#x27;ll be taught the basic technique, or you&#x27;ll go skating straight away. After about an hour, you will go inside for some well-deserved hot or cold drinks. Sauna and winter bathing are available if you feel up for it.

Critical Mass is a global event held on the last Friday of every month where cyclists and other active road users take to the streets in masses. The concept is to take action and show their visibility by reclaiming public space, roads and streets.
