Manfred Mann was born in Johannesburg in South Africa in 1940 but has been active in England since 1962. Together with the band also called Manfred Mann, he had more hits in England than The Beatles in the 60s. In 1971, he formed Manfred Mann's Earth Band, which played more progressive rock and genre-crossing sound similar to British bands such as Cream and Traffic. They also interpreted other artists and had, among other things, a big hit with their version of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light".
