By car in Stockholm

Traveling to Stockholm by car? Learn about the congestion charge and where to park in Stockholm at Visit Stockholm.
If you come by car or rent a car in Stockholm you may park at Park-and-Ride facilities, in parking garages, or on designated street parking. If your car is registered in Sweden you are obliged to pay a congestion charge in the Stockholm inner city.
It's easy to rent a car in Stockholm. Most major international car rental companies have offices and rental locations at all of Stockholm's airports. It's possible to book ahead of time or at the airport. To rent a car you will need a national driving license and a valid passport. Stockholm's inner city has road tolls for Swedish-registered vehicles, so be sure to ask if tolls are included in the price.
Park-and-Ride
Just outside the inner city are more than 40 Park-and-Ride facilities close to public transport connections. Leaving your car at one of these will contribute to a better environment; it's cheaper and often a lot simpler than trying to find parking in the inner city.
To take advantage of the low-day price, you must park at a Park-and-Ride between 05:00 and 09:00. You'll find a Park-and-Ride map in the links below.
Parking in town
There are plenty of parking garages in the inner city, especially in Norrmalm. Some parking garages charge for the time you have parked as you are leaving. The price is often between SEK 90 and 120 per hour on weekdays. A daily fee (24 hours) at a garage in the city is usually somewhere in the vicinity of SEK 400.
If you park in designated street parking, pay attention to the signs. Most places where you are allowed to park on the street have signs at the entrance to each neighborhood. Street parking meters charge by the hour; many take VISA and MasterCard. There are also several parking apps available, like EasyPark and Parkster.
Charge stations for electrical cars
Keeping in line with Stockholm’s vision of being a fossil-fuel-free city by 2040, charge stations for electric cars have been popping up since 2008. In 2022, there were over 3500 charging stations across greater Stockholm.
Congestion charge and infrastructure charge
There is a congestion charge on weekdays between 06:30-18:29. Road toll cameras register all vehicles and an invoice is sent to the vehicle owner at the end of the month. Each trip in or out of Stockholm's inner city or on the Essigneleden highway costs SEK 11-40, depending on the time of day.
The maximum amount per day per vehicle is SEK 135 during the high season, and 105 SEK during the off-season. The charge is somewhat lower during the summer, 25/6-11/8. There is no charge during weekends and holidays.
There is also an infrastructure charge at Skurubron, which connects Stockholm with eastern Nacka and Värmdö. Every car passage costs 4 SEK. Both Swedish-registered and foreign vehicles are charged.
For both charges, the payment system is completely automatic; When you drive past a control point, a camera registers the vehicle and a payment slip is sent to its owner by mail.
You can also get an e-mail with your invoice if you register with epass24.
