Ornate runestones, in effect ancient billboards with important messages written in runic alphabets, were a preferred mode of communication of the Vikings. Of the world's 7500+ recorded rune stones over 2000 are located in Sweden, and they can be found in the woods all around the Stockholm area. But the biggest concentration of preserved runestones in the world can be found in Runriket just north of Stockholm. Runriket is located in the woods around Vallentunasjön and free for everyone to visit. But to make the best out of your Viking hike, start at the official park entrance at Jarlbankes bridge and work your way around the trail! You can also book a guided tour of the area with a personal guide.
