Publish date: 30 September 2024
Sweden is positioning itself as a serious contender on the international esports circuit. We had a chat with the National Team's Captain Fredrik Kempf about his favorite hangouts in Stockholm.
Sweden is a leading nation in esports, with top international players and teams, an infrastructure of high-speed internet in every home, and modern gaming centers hosting events and championships. In May of 2023, competitive gaming in Sweden reached another milestone as Riksidrottsförbundet (the Swedish Sports Confederation) granted the Swedish Esport Federation official membership status.
The national team manager is Fredrik Kempf, also known by the gaming moniker "Jaegarn". Born and raised in the northern Stockholm suburb of Täby, Fredrik found his way into esports when an injury prevented him from playing soccer. "I was always a good soccer player, but I was also very withdrawn as a teenager", Fredrik explains. "It was difficult and awkward to communicate with my teammates". He came to his right in competitive gaming, having an interest in games am computers.
Swedish national teams currently compete internationally in three games; Rocket League, DotA 2, and Counter Strike. Fredrik explains that being the team manager is comparable to the same role in the Swedish Athletics Association. He has several teams and disciplines under his wing and has a more overarching and visionary role. Whereas the manager of a National Football team has a more hands-on approach. Fredrik also works in Esports coaching and education, at Area Academy, and is a commentator during streams and broadcasts of the Swedish CS:GO National League.
Here are Fredrik's 5 best Stockholm tips:
Täby Centrum: "I grew up in Täby, so I have a nostalgia for the mall here. It's a large shopping center with lots of shops, covering most of your needs."
Inferno Online: "Inferno has a long history in esports and gaming. It was founded in the late '90s, in Norrköping. The gaming center at Odenplan opened in 2003 making it one of Stockholm's oldest, and best."
Kappa Bar: "Like a really good sports bar, but for esports and gaming. Watch championships and matches on a big screen, play console games, or compete in their regular pub quizzes".
Restaurang AG: "The best restaurant for meat in Stockholm. If you're looking for a great dinner experience, this is where I would go."
