My favorite shops in central Stockholm
Publish date: 21 August 2024
Stockholm's shops are a goldmine for anyone passionate about classic fashion or cutting-edge interior design. In the central borough of Norrmalm, you'll find some of the best.
I live and breathe fashion and design. I'd call my personal style classic with a twist; when it comes to fashion and interior design, I like to mix the new with the old. Preferably tailored garments, but with a look that should never be too symmetrical or perfect. There has to always be some silhouette, fabric, or accessory happening.
In this regard, I can always count on Stockholm's fashion and design boutiques to offer up something exciting. Sure, ordering stuff online is comfortable and all, but an old-fashioned shopping spree by foot just can't be beat! A pair of comfy sneakers and other necessities are always ready in my handbag, should I need to slip into something more casual for some spontaneous shopping in the middle of a hectic downtown-Stockholm day.
Sleepacy
Sleepacy is unique, being the world’s first sleep concept store. Besides typical sleep-related products like beds, sheets, and pajamas, Sleepacy helps you get the most out of your sleeping hours. You’ll find training gear, scented candles, bath oils, and lighting; all designed and produced with the latest in the field of sleep in mind. The store space is divided into various sections, all focusing on a different aspect of sleeping. At the “Sleep pod”-section, for example, the staff helps you design a comfortable bed tailored to your needs. A bed you can personalize through color and materials at the “Design”-section. Furthermore, the store has professional sleep coaches on staff to help troubled sleepers get a good night’s shut-eye.
Art Bakery
No day of shopping is complete without a fika break at a coffee shop or patisserie. I love to grab something beautiful to go (great desserts are after all a feast for all senses) from Art Bakery at NK Department store. The bakery has made a name for itself with its delicious artisan bread and gorgeous pastries.
Norrmalms Elektriska
I love fancy furniture and stylish design as much as the next person, but if I only can afford one new item to spruce up my home, I always go for a new lamp. Lighting is an incredibly simple way to change a room's overall vibe, and it cheers you up during the year’s darkest months. Norrmalms Elektriska is a fourth-generation family business where I usually go for my fix. They have an excellent assortment of lamps and armatures; both timeless classics and designs from up-and-coming designers, with passionate staff to help pick the right lamps for your home.
Elsas Vintagebröllop
Elsa Billgren is Sweden’s own vintage queen, and her studio is a treasure trove of beautiful wedding dresses for rent. It’s simply the perfect place if you're looking for the ultimate bridal gown, or maybe a dreamy summer party outfit. The studio is only open to pre-booked visits, which makes the experience feel even more unique. You’ll feel inspired just by browsing through all the beautiful dresses, and getting a sample taste of Billgren’s expertise and passion for materials, design, and sewing.
Lyko Concept Skin
I have a deep, almost emotional, obsession with skincare. Taking care of yourself actually makes you happier, which is why shopping for skincare products has become something of a therapeutic hobby of mine. So when Lyko opened a concept store in Stockholm – 300 square meters packed with the world’s premier skin lotions, the latest machines, and technology in skincare – I wasn’t late to the party. Lyko’s staff are all professional skincare therapists, happy to share their advice on how to best treat your skin. On the store’s basement level, you’ll also find five fully-kitted therapy rooms offering a wide selection of treatments. The store has since relocated and today you'll find it on Drottninggatan.
Ganni
Even though Ganni sounds Italian, it’s in fact a Danish fashion brand; bold and colorful, with elements of the ‘50s and ‘60s fashion. As opposed to her Scandinavian peers, chief designer Ditte Reffstrup doesn't shy away from vibrant colors and animal motifs in Ganni’s collections. The boutique's interior also has a sustainable profile, with both furniture and building materials being recycled. Basically, this is a great spot to find something spiffy and cheerful for the weekend’s partying.
JUS
JUS has been a watering hole for the ever-growing number of quality-conscious design shoppers since the ‘90s. The store has a selection of both Swedish and international brands like Dries Van Noten, Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto, Maison Margiela, Monika Förster x Zanat, Nor Autonom, and Comme des Garçons. Swedes in particular have a penchant for dark and black luxury garments, which you’ll definitely find here.
Nygårdsanna
Fashion brand Nygårdsanna was founded by award-winning designer Anna Bengtsson, who also designed the company's store on Mäster Samuelsgatan in Stockholm. The brand's clothes are made from naturally sourced materials in natural colors with craftsmanship of the highest order, passed down from Bengtsson's grandparents in Dalarna. I've been shopping here for as long as I can remember and the garments have accompanied me on many adventures. And when they've been in need of some extra love – a missing button or torn sleeve – I just bring them back to the store. Sustainability is after all a big part of Nygårdsanna's ethos. Their clothes are meant to last, and they're happy to fix a missing button or torn sleeve for you. During the summer, Nygårdsanna also operates a pop-up Archive Store in Old Town where you'll find past collections and unique garments for a bargain price.
CHIMI
Stockholm-based sunglass brand CHIMI was founded by childhood friends Daniel Djurdjevic och Charlie Lindström. Their collections are inspired by iconic designs, made in handcrafted Italian acetate. A great shop where you’ll find goggles for the winter’s ski slopes as well as something more edgy and vivid to wear when spring comes around.
Myrqvist
Myrqvist is a gem for anyone who appreciates high-quality shoes. The concept has an Italian aura about it, but Myrqvist’s founder Sebastian Öhrn is a Swede with a vision to offer handmade shoes at reasonable prices. The fact that he’s collaborated with architect Thomas Sandell – for a collection of shoes designed in Sweden and made by hand in Portugal – only makes the brand even more exciting.
Blommor från Norrmalmstorg
A lovely bouquet of flowers doesn’t just elevate a room, but your mood as well! I always buy Friday flowers from the vendor on Norrmalmstorg square. They have a great selection and you’re always greeted with a smile. Also, they’re exceptionally skilled at arranging beautiful bunches, without having it cost a fortune.
